Sometimes I wonder how Gilat would have liked it if she knew what we were all doing on her behalf. On the one hand, she didn’t like being the centre of attention, but on the other, I’m sure she would have wanted to be in every performance. That’s how much she loved theatre. In any case, we are extremely proud to be able to do this on her behalf.
A good friend asked me the other day: ‘How many children do you actually reach every year?’ I had to think about it for a while. Eventually I came up with a figure of around 7,500 a year. My friend then said something that has stuck with me immensely, namely:
‘As a parent, you want children to make an impact in their own way. So Gilat is actually making an impact on 7,500 children. That’s really wonderful,’
These were comforting words for us. We miss her every day, but do wonderful work in her name. We will always have a scar in our hearts, but at the same time we are grateful for what we bring about with the foundation.
To return to the question of how Gilat would have liked it, now that I write about it, I think she would have taken it at face value that she would be ‘world-famous’ in children’s hospitals. Knowing that through her children forget for a moment that they are sick.
